Good example for the species from this famous old locality, brilliant yellow crystals of helvite measuring to 0.2 cm in size or on crystallized quartz with minor pink rhodochrosite. In good condition. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates to the very early 20th century.

The Cavnic mining district, located in the Maramures region of northern Romania, is a historic epithermal polymetallic deposit situated within the Gutai Mountains. Geologically, the area features a complex network of hydrothermal veins hosted in Neogene volcanic rocks, primarily andesites and dacites, alongside structural breccias and localized sedimentary sequences. The ore fluids deposited massive lead, zinc, and copper sulfides, including galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, within quartz and carbonate gangue, which frequently left open vugs filled with well-crystallized specimens of rhodochrosite, calcite, and barite. Mining activity in the region dates back to Roman times, with formal written records tracking organized extraction from at least 1336. The mines underwent massive industrialization under Austro-Hungarian and later state control during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, producing substantial quantities of base and precious metals until economic shifts and environmental restructuring led to the permanent closure of all mining operations in 2006.

Ede Themak, who operated under the Hungarian name order Themak Ede, was an active mineral collector, geologist, and secondary school teacher based in Temesvar, which is modern-day Timisoara, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As a prominent member of the Natural Science Society of Southern Hungary, known historically as the Delmagyarorszagi Termeszettudomanyi Tarsulat, he conducted extensive field research, including late-nineteenth-century cave excavations in the Bihar Mountains to recover ice-age fossil bones. In addition to teaching, he maintained a robust scientific and commercial network, publishing papers such as his 1905 work regarding specialized regional mineral species, and acting as a regional dealer who supplied institutional collections and global distributors, including Ward's Natural Science Establishment in the United States, with well-documented specimens from classic Carpathian and Balkan localities.
