The Rio Marina mining district, located on the eastern coast of the island of Elba, Italy, is one of the most historic mineral localities in the world, renowned for its spectacular iron deposits. Historically, mining and quarrying at Rio Marina date back to the Etruscan and Roman eras, making it one of the oldest continuously worked mining sites in Europe. Organized industrial extraction intensified in the 19th century and continued as a vital source of iron ore for the Italian steel industry throughout the early 20th century. While commercial iron production officially ceased in 1981, the site has transitioned into a protected mineralogical park.
