Hematite

specimen number:
2072293

location:
Rio Marina, Elba, Tuscany, Italy

description:
Lustrous bladed metallic iridescent crystals of hematite measuring to 1.5 cm in size on matrix. In good condition with minimal damage present, the prominent crystals are fine. Quartz is present.

The Rio Marina mining district, located on the eastern coast of the island of Elba, Italy, is one of the most historic mineral localities in the world, renowned for its spectacular iron deposits. Geologically, the area features a complex contact between Paleozoic metamorphic basement rocks and Triassic sedimentary sequences, where iron-rich hydrothermal fluids created massive replacement deposits and vein systems. The locality is most famous for its hematite, which occurs as brilliant, metallic-black crystals typically forming thick tabular plates or rhombohedral crystals that often display a vivid, iridescent tarnish. Historically, mining and quarrying at Rio Marina date back to the Etruscan and Roman eras, making it one of the oldest continuously worked mining sites in Europe. Organized industrial extraction intensified in the 19th century and continued as a vital source of iron ore for the Italian steel industry throughout the early 20th century. While commercial iron production officially ceased in 1981, the site has transitioned into a protected mineralogical park. As of 2026, the district remains a premier destination for researchers and collectors, celebrated for the high luster and historical significance of its hematite specimens.
