description: The Botesti district (historically known as Botesbanya or Golddorf), located near Zlatna within the Alba County of Romania, is a classic European locality celebrated for producing some of the world's finest crystals of the silver telluride mineral hessite. Geologically, the area is situated in the Metaliferi Mountains within the famous Golden Quadrilateral of Transylvania, a region characterized by intense Neogene volcanism that formed prolific epithermal gold-silver-telluride vein systems hosted within Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks and andesitic intrusions. Within these low-temperature, hydrothermal veins, hessite formed exceptional, highly modified pseudocubic and elongated prismatic crystals up to several centimeters in length, typically occurring alongside native gold, quartz, calcite, and various other rare tellurides. Historically, mining and underground quarrying at Botesti began as small-scale extraction for gold during antiquity and the Roman era, with organized, systematic operations heavily expanding under Austro-Hungarian and German administration in the 18th and 19th centuries. The primary underground works, including the classic Anna and Jacob mines, reached their peak production of precious metals and telluride ores in the late 1800s and early 1900s, before gradually declining and closing by the mid-20th century.
A choice old European classic with well crystallized metallic hessite across the top of matrix. This is in very good condition. Minor quartz is present. The specimen comes with several previous labels as shown at the end of the video.
