Hessite with Pyrite, Quartz

specimen number:
1052685

location:
Zlatna, Alba Co., Romania

description:
An open pocket in matrix about 1.0 cm across, this lined with crystals of quartz and small pyrite crystals. Scattered throughout her micro metallic crystals of calcite. Good reference quality example for the species from this famous old locality. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video.

The Zlatna mining district (historically known as Ampelum), situated within the Alba County region of the Apuseni Mountains in Transylvania, Romania, is a world-class historical mineral locality famous for producing exceptional native gold and rare telluride minerals. Geologically, this prolific district is located inside the Golden Quadrilateral and is characterized by Neogene-age calc-alkaline volcanic structures, where highly complex, epithermal vein systems and breccia pipes intruded Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. Hydrothermal fluids moving through these fracture networks precipitated rich polymetallic base-metal sulfides alongside abundant native gold, pyrite, and highly prized gold-silver tellurides like sylvanite and petzite, typically hosted within a quartz, calcite, and rhodochrosite gangue matrix. Historically, primitive surface quarrying and underground panning operations date back to the pre-Roman Dacian era, expanding dramatically under Roman imperial administration into a major administrative center for gold mining. Modern, intensive industrial underground mining and smelter operations reached their zenith during the Austro-Hungarian period and continued under Romanian state management through the twentieth century, running continuously across several deep shaft networks until the depletion of the highest-grade ore bodies and severe environmental pollution forced the permanent closure of all major state-run mining operations in 2006.
