location:
Barra do Salinas, Coronel Murta, Minas Gerais, Brazil
description: The Barra do Salinas district in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is a celebrated mineral locality situated within a geologic environment rich in complex pegmatites and aluminum-bearing metamorphic rocks. Regional pegmatite and hydrothermal activity developed extensively during past tectonic and metamorphic cycles, shaping the crystalline architecture of the area. The region has seen artisanal and targeted mineral collecting operations over the decades - notably yielding remarkable specimen discoveries during the mid-1990s. Barra do Salinas is best known for producing very fine examples of blue kyanite on a white massive quartz matrix.
Attractive blue bladed slightly translucent crystals of kyanite measuring to almost 6.0 cm in size on a massive quartz matrix. Classic material for the species and locality.
