Malachite after Azurite
specimen number:
1052523
location:
Touissit, Oujda, Morocco
description: The Touissit mining district, located in the eastern part of Morocco near the border with Algeria, is a premier world locality for base metal mineralization. Geologically, it is situated within a series of Jurassic-aged carbonate rocks that form part of a large sedimentary basin. The deposit is classified as a Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) system, where metal-rich hydrothermal fluids migrated through porous limestone and dolostone to precipitate massive amounts of lead and zinc. Historically, the area has been an active mining center since the early 20th century, with significant industrial development beginning under French administration in the 1920s. While the primary focus was the extraction of lead and zinc ores, the mine gained international fame among mineralogists for the discovery of spectacular, well-crystallized secondary minerals. The unique chemical environment, characterized by the oxidation of primary sulfides, produced world-class specimens of azurite, wulfenite, and cerussite. Industrial mining operations at Touissit were officially closed in 2002, though small-scale artisanal mining continues in the region to this day.
Bladed crystals of what were once azurite, these now replaced by malachite and scattered across the top of matrix. In good condition.
