description: Classic old German specimen with lustrous black prismatic crystals of manganite measuring to 4.0 cm in length across the top of a massive manganite matrix with white bladed barite. Some damage present as seen, this still in very good large cabinet example for this old material. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. This label notes that at one time the specimen was part of the collection of Wilhelm Hoyer, dating this to the 19th century. Ilfeld, situated in the Harz Mountains of Thuringia, Germany, is globally recognized for producing the finest crystallized examples of the manganese oxide mineral, manganite. Geologically, the deposits are located within the Ilfeld Basin, where Permian-aged volcanic rocks, specifically porphyrite and melaphyre, contain numerous veins and cavities. These cavities provided the perfect environment for hydrothermal fluids to deposit large, lustrous, jet-black to dark grey prismatic manganite crystals, which are often found in association with barite and calcite. Historically, mining and quarrying activities in the Ilfeld district were focused on the manganese veins found in the late 18th and 19th centuries, with the most famous specimens originating from the Glueckauf Mine and the Braunstein Mine. The primary period of intensive mining for manganese ore lasted from roughly 1880 until the early 1920s, after which commercial production became less viable. While industrial operations have long since ceased, the district remains a legendary locality for mineralogists, and Ilfeld manganite specimens are considered the standard by which all others are judged. Today, the area is a protected site of geological heritage, continuing to be a subject of academic study through 2026. Wilhelm Hoyer was a prominent nineteenth-century German engineer and mineral collector based in Hanover who made significant contributions to the documentation of European mineralogy. Professionally involved in the development of the German railway system, Hoyer utilized his travels and industrial connections to assemble an extensive and high-quality collection, with a particular focus on the diverse mineral species of the Harz Mountains and the classic localities of Saxony. His collection was noted by contemporaries for its systematic organization and the inclusion of rare crystallized specimens that documented the peak of Central European underground mining. Historically, Hoyer is remembered for his collaboration with leading mineralogists of the era, and after his death, a substantial portion of his life's work was integrated into major institutional archives, including the University of Bonn. His legacy remains relevant through 2026 as his preserved specimens, often still accompanied by his original handwritten labels, provide a vital historical record of localities that have long been inaccessible or exhausted.
