description: The A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum, located at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, serves as the official Mineral Museum of Michigan and houses one of North America's premier mineral collections. Historically, the museum traces its roots back to the 19th century, evolving from a teaching collection established shortly after the Michigan Mining School was founded in 1885. It was named in honor of Professor Arthur Edmund Seaman, who served as the first department head of geology and was instrumental in curating and expanding the repository through the early 20th century. Geologically, the museum is renowned for its unparalleled collection of native copper and associated minerals from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, as well as significant specimens from the Marquette and Menominee iron ranges. Over the decades, the museum has moved several times to accommodate its growing inventory, finally settling into its current purpose-built facility in 2011. Today, the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum functions as a vital educational resource and a world-class destination for mineralogists, researchers, and hobbyists interested in the rich geo-heritage of the Great Lakes region.
