St. Andreasberg, located in the High Harz Mountains of Lower Saxony, Germany, is a legendary silver mining district famous for its complex hydrothermal vein systems. Geologically, the area is characterized by a dense network of veins cutting through Devonian and Carboniferous sedimentary rocks, mineralized during the Permian period with a unique suite of silver, lead, and zinc minerals. The district is world-renowned for its exceptional specimens of pyrargyrite, a silver antimony sulfosalt also known as "dark ruby silver." Pyrargyrite from St. Andreasberg typically occurs as deep red to metallic dark gray, hexagonal crystals that exhibit a stunning ruby-red internal reflection when thin or backlit. Historically, mining in the region dates back to the 15th century, reaching its peak in the 18th century when the mines produced some of the finest silver minerals ever recorded in Europe. Although the last mines closed in 1910, St. Andreasberg remains a classic locality for mineralogists, with its pyrargyrite specimens serving as historical benchmarks for the species in global collections.
