Pyrite

specimen number:
2102389

location:
Ross Co., Ohio, USA

description:
Neat crystallized grouping of pyrite typical of this area. In good condition, this is likely repaired. Complete all around.

Ross County, located in the southern part of Ohio, is a historically significant region for mineral enthusiasts due to its notable occurrences of pyrite, marcasite, and specialized septarian concretions. Geologically, these minerals are hosted within the Late Devonian-aged Ohio Shale, a thick sequence of carbonaceous black shales deposited in a vast, oxygen-poor marine basin. Under these reducing conditions, iron-reducing bacteria interacted with organic matter and dissolved sulfates in the seafloor sediments, precipitating abundant iron sulfides that grew into solid nodular masses, crystalline aggregates, and beautiful metallic coatings on fossil remnants. The history of extracting these materials in Ross County has never involved large-scale, automated industrial mining for iron or sulfur ore; instead, production has been defined by localized quarrying for road gravel, aggregate, and shale, alongside extensive manual field collecting by amateur mineralogists. From the early 20th century through the 1970s and 1980s, active commercial limestone and shale quarries, as well as natural stream cuts along Paint Creek, served as prolific sources for collectors seeking brilliant, well-crystallized pyrite specimens, though modern corporate safety restrictions and the natural weathering of exposed shale faces have greatly reduced access to these classic collecting sites in recent decades.
