location:
Rensselaer Quarry, Pleasant Ridge, Jasper Co., Indiana, USA
description: The Rensselaer Quarry, also known as the Pleasant Ridge Quarry, located near Pleasant Ridge in Jasper County, Indiana, is a former commercial aggregate operation that gained widespread renown among mineral collectors. Geologically, the quarry is excavated within Paleozoic carbonate strata of the middle Devonian Muscatatuck Group, consisting primarily of grayish-brown sparry dolostone. Vugs and cavities within the rock matrix frequently contain native hydrocarbon residues alongside hydrothermal mineral assemblages. The site is particularly famous for producing striking iron sulfide specimens, including intricate cockscomb marcasite, complex pyrite bars, and unique crystal overgrowths, as well as well-formed calcite and dolomite crystals.
Sharp semi lustrous crystals of pyrite in a cluster with little attached matrix. In good condition.
