Rio Marina, located on the eastern coast of the Island of Elba in Tuscany, Italy, is one of the most ancient and celebrated mining districts in the world. Geologically, the deposits are characterized by contact metasomatism, where iron-rich fluids from granite intrusions interacted with Paleozoic basement rocks and Triassic limestones. This unique environment produced legendary mineral combinations, specifically the association of lustrous pyrite and hematite. The pyrite at Rio Marina typically occurs as brilliant, brassy-yellow crystals with pentagonal dodecahedral or pyritohedral habits, while the hematite is found as stunning, metallic-black "iron roses" or thin, tabular crystals with a vivid iridescent tarnish. Historically, mining at Rio Marina dates back to the Etruscans and Romans, continuing through the Middle Ages until the final closure of the mines in 1981. Today, the area is preserved as a mineral park, serving as a historic monument to Italy's rich mining heritage and as a classic locality for some of the finest iron minerals ever recovered.
