The Fat Jack Mine, located in the Bradshaw Mountains near Crown King in Yavapai County, Arizona, is a premier American locality famous for its aesthetic amethyst scepter crystals. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within Precambrian granitic rocks that have been fractured and intruded by later hydrothermal systems. The amethyst occurs in open pockets or vugs within quartz veins, where fluctuating environmental conditions during crystal growth allowed for the formation of classic scepter habits, featuring deep purple amethyst heads perched upon lighter-colored quartz stems. Historically, the mine was originally worked as a small-scale gold and silver prospect in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, its modern fame began in the 1970s and 1980s when mineral collectors rediscovered the site and began commercial specimen mining. The property has seen sporadic but highly productive mechanical mining efforts through the 1990s and early 2000s, cementing its reputation for producing some of the finest and most recognizable amethyst scepters in the United States.
