The Huanggang Mines, located in the Hexigten Banner of Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, China, comprise a massive iron-tin polymetallic deposit famous for producing exceptional mineral specimens. Geologically, the site is a classic skarn deposit formed by the intrusion of Yanshanian granites into Permian limestone and marble formations. This complex contact metamorphism created vast ore bodies rich in magnetite and cassiterite, while the associated hydrothermal activity produced a stunning variety of minerals, most notably sharp ilvaite crystals and world-class fluorite in a wide range of colors and habits. Historically, the deposit was discovered in the late 20th century, with major industrial open-pit and underground mining operations commencing in the early 2000s under the Inner Mongolia Huanggang Mining Company. While its primary economic output remains industrial iron and tin, the mine reached global mineralogical fame between 2010 and 2015 when spectacular pockets of diverse species were unearthed. Today, Huanggang continues to be a major industrial producer and a prolific source of high-quality mineral specimens for the international market.
