Rhodochrosite

specimen number:
2133214

location:
Poudrette Quarry, Mt. St. Hilaire, Quebec, Canada

description:
A loose mostly gemmy deep red flattened crystal grouping of rhodochrosite. Good thumbnail for the species from this famous locality.

The Poudrette Quarry at Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, is a world-renowned alkaline igneous locality famous for its incredibly diverse mineralogy, including rare rhodochrosite specimens. Geologically, the site is part of the Monteregian Hills petrographic province and consists of an alkalic intrusive complex composed of syenites, nepheline syenites, and marble xenoliths. The rhodochrosite typically formed in late-stage hydrothermal vugs and pegmatites, occurring as distinct rhombohedral crystals or rounded, disc-like aggregates ranging in color from pale pink to deep cherry red. Historically, the quarry began operations in the early 20th century, with the Poudrette family managing the site from 1959 until it was acquired by Uni-Mix in 1992 and later by Ciment St-Laurent. While industrial production focused on crushed stone and aggregate, the 1970s and 1980s marked a golden age for mineralogical discovery, yielding hundreds of species including the famous deep red rhodochrosites. Today, the site is largely closed to the public and collectors, but it remains one of the most significant mineral localities in the world due to the more than 400 species documented there.
