The San Martin Mine is located in the Chiurucu area of the Huallanca District within the Ancash Department of Peru. Geologically, it is a high-altitude hydrothermal deposit associated with the late Miocene volcanic and intrusive activity of the Andes. The mineralization occurs as veins and replacement bodies hosted in Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, primarily limestones and shales. Historically, the mine was worked on a relatively small scale for base metals like lead and zinc, but it achieved international fame in the late 20th and early 21st centuries for its world-class rhodonite specimens. The complex tectonic setting of the Ancash region provided the perfect conditions for the formation of large, open vugs where rare manganese silicate and carbonate minerals could crystallize in exceptional quality.
