location:
New Nevada Mine, Batopilas, Chihuahua, Mexico
description: Classic dendritic twinned crystals of native silver in a cluster with calcite. In great condition. Crystallized completely all around. The New Nevada Mine, located in the Batopilas District of Chihuahua, Mexico, is situated within the prolific Batopilas silver-mining region of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Geologically, the deposit consists of high-grade native silver mineralization hosted in a series of near-vertical calcite veins that cut through diorite and andesitic volcanic rocks. The site is famous for producing exceptional specimens of native silver, often occurring as wire-like, dendritic, or herringbone-shaped crystals within the calcite matrix. Historically, while silver mining in Batopilas dates back to Spanish colonial times in the 1600s, the New Nevada Mine was part of the late 19th-century boom facilitated by the Batopilas Mining Company under Alexander Shepherd. Operations at the mine were most significant between the 1880s and the early 1910s, contributing to the district's reputation as one of the world's premier sources of native silver.
