Dzhezkazgan, located in the Karaganda region of central Kazakhstan, is home to one of the largest sediment-hosted sandstone copper deposits in the world. Geologically, the deposit sits within the Chu-Sarysu sedimentary basin, where extensive Pennsylvanian red-bed sequences host multi-layered cupriferous horizons formed by fluid mixing and metal precipitation. Mining activity in the area dates back to ancient Bronze Age civilizations that extracted surface ores, followed by centuries of sporadic local working. Modern industrial development accelerated in the early 20th century, driven heavily by Soviet geological surveys led by Kanysh Satpayev in the 1920s and 1930s, which confirmed massive commercial reserves and established the region as a primary global hub for copper production.
