Spodumene

specimen number:
9273021

location:
Dara-e-Pech, Kunar, Afghanistan

description:

A large attractive grouping of gemmy lustrous pinkish-purple spodumene crystals, this is the variety often called kunzite. This is in super condition all around. Minor albite is attached.

The Dara-i-Pech district (also spelled Dara-e-Pech), situated along the Pech River Valley within the Konar Province of northeastern Afghanistan, is a prolific region of artisanal and small-scale underground mining operations internationally renowned for producing exceptional gem-grade and mineral specimens of elbaite, spodumene (kunzite), beryl (morganite and aquamarine), and lepidolite. Geologically, this rugged terrain forms part of the Hindu Kush crystalline complex, where extensive swarm networks of complex, highly fractionated, lithium-cesium-tantalum (LCT) type granitic pegmatites intruded into older metamorphic schists and gneisses during the alpine orogeny of the tertiary period. These coarse-grained pegmatite bodies contain large, well-developed miarolitic cavities or pockets where slow cooling allowed for the crystallization of giant, sharply zoned, multi-colored crystals and associated rare-element minerals. Historically, while localized gemstone harvesting occurred sporadically for generations, systematic mining for commercial mineral specimens intensified in the late 1970s and early 1980s despite severe regional conflicts. Digging operations across the steep mountain ridges are conducted entirely by local miners using primitive hand tools and black powder, with production fluctuating wildly over the decades based on shifting geopolitical stability, blockades, and local tribal control. Through 2026, the active pegmatite fields of Dara-i-Pech continue to serve as a vital, non-industrial economic lifeline for the region, remaining a premier global geological benchmark for studying high-degree geochemical fractionation in pegmatite fields.
