Stoneco Quarry, Maybee, Michigan, USA

description:

A large and sharply formed crystal for the species from this Michigan locality. Slightly translucent and semi lustrous. Minor matrix is attached. This is in excellent condition. Collected by Dan Edmondson. Collected in 2020.

The Stoneco Maybee Quarry, located in Monroe County, Michigan, is a significant industrial site with a history of mineral extraction dating back to the late 19th century. Originally opened in 1899, the quarry has undergone various ownership changes while serving as a vital source of crushed stone for the Great Lakes region. Geologically, the quarry penetrates the Silurian-aged Raisin River Dolomite, which is part of the Bass Islands Group. This fine-grained, brownish-gray dolomite was deposited in a restricted, shallow marine environment and is highly valued for its durability in construction and road paving. To mineral enthusiasts, the Maybee Quarry is most famous for its remarkable secondary mineralization within cavities. It has historically produced world-class specimens of sulfur, often occurring as bright yellow crystals, as well as aesthetic clusters of celestine, calcite, and strontianite. While the site remains a high-output commercial facility today, it continues to be recognized in scientific literature for its unique geochemical environment that allowed for the formation of such distinct native sulfur and sulfate minerals.
