The Stoneco quarry, historically known by names such as the Woolmith quarry or Maybee quarry, is a large aggregate operation situated just north of the village of Maybee in Monroe County, Michigan. Geologically, the quarry is excavated into the lower Devonian to upper Silurian sedimentary strata of the Detroit River Group and the Raisin River Dolomite, which consist primarily of fine-grained, siliceous dolomites interbedded with sandstone horizons. Hydrothermal and supergene alteration within these porous carbonate beds led to the localized formation of mineralized pockets containing sharp crystals of celestine, native sulfur, calcite, and strontianite. Small-scale quarrying for building stone and lime burning began at the site in the mid-nineteenth century, with systematic production expanding during the late nineteenth century before operations were abandoned and flooded prior to World War I. The site was subsequently drained and returned to active industrial production around 1960, and it continues to operate as a major source of crushed limestone and aggregate materials.
