Slightly translucent semi lustrous crystals of yellow sulfur to 3.0 cm in size across the top of a crystallized aragonite matrix. Some damage present, the prominent crystals are in good condition.

The Agrigento area of Sicily, Italy, is a central part of the Gessoso-Solfifera Formation, a massive evaporite sequence that spans much of the island. Geologically, these sulfur deposits formed during the Messinian salinity crisis in the late Miocene epoch, when the Mediterranean Sea partially evaporated, leading to the precipitation of gypsum, salt, and native sulfur through the bacterial reduction of sulfates in a restricted marine environment. The sulfur typically occurs as bright yellow, bipyramidal crystals or massive veins within bituminiferous marls and gypsum. Historically, sulfur mining and quarrying in the Agrigento region, particularly around the towns of Casteltermini and Favara, dates back to the Roman era, but reached an industrial peak during the 19th and early 20th centuries when Sicily supplied the majority of the world's sulfur. Operations were famously labor-intensive and continued until the mid-20th century, with many mines, such as the Cozzo Disi, closing between the 1960s and 1990s due to the lower cost of the Frasch extraction process used elsewhere. As of 2026, the abandoned mine sites and vast waste heaps near Agrigento serve as important industrial heritage sites and continue to provide collectors with classic specimens of sulfur often associated with white celestine and aragonite.
