Sulfur with Barite

specimen number:
1605077

location:
Machow Mine, Tarnobrzeg, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Poland

description:
A cluster of colorless bladed barite crystals hosting crystals of native sulfur. In good condition, nice for this classic Polish locality.

The Machow Mine, located near Tarnobrzeg in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship of Poland, was one of Europe's largest and most important native sulfur extraction operations. Sulfur deposits were discovered in the region in 1953, leading to the establishment of large-scale open-cast mining operations that officially ran from 1970 to 1992. Geologically, the deposits formed within the northern part of the Carpathian Foredeep, where sulfur-bearing limestones developed through the bacterial reduction of Miocene gypsum and anhydrite beds driven by hydrocarbons. Mineralogically, the mine became globally famous among collectors for producing some of the world's finest crystal specimens of native sulfur, featuring vibrant canary-yellow, highly lustrous, transparent crystals often associated with calcite, celestine, baryte, and gypsum. Following the cessation of mining activities and the closure of the facility, the massive open pit was successfully reclaimed and flooded, transforming into a popular recreational lake opened to the public in 2010.
