Torbernite

specimen number:
2072122

location:
Musonoi Mine, Kolwezi, Lualaba, DR Congo

description:
Brilliant emerald green thin platy crystals of torbernite across the front of the malachite matrix. Some damage present as seen.

The Musonoi Mine, located near Kolwezi in the Lualaba Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a legendary site within the Central African Copperbelt. Since its opening in the early 20th century, it has been a major open-pit operation for copper and cobalt. Geologically, the deposit is hosted in the Katanga Supergroup, specifically within Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks like dolomitic shales and siltstones. These rocks underwent significant folding and faulting, which allowed metal-rich hydrothermal fluids to create massive ore bodies. Musonoi is world-famous among mineralogists as a premier locality for rare secondary uranium and palladium minerals. It is the type locality for several species, including sengierite and guilleminite. Collectors highly prize the vibrant specimens found there, such as bright green torbernite, yellow carnotite, and the rare pinkish-red cobaltian calcite. Although mining has evolved over decades of political and industrial change, the site remains an essential reference for the study of complex oxidation zones in sediment-hosted copper deposits.
