The Blackbird Mine, located in the Cobalt District of Lemhi County, Idaho, is one of the few significant cobalt deposits in the United States. Geologically, the site is hosted within the Proterozoic Yellowjacket Formation, consisting of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks such as quartzites and siltites. The ore bodies occur as strata-bound lenses and veins formed by hydrothermal activity, containing a unique mineral assemblage of cobaltite, chalcopyrite, and gold, often associated with iron-rich biotite and chlorite alteration. Historically, mining in the area began in the late 1800s with an initial focus on gold and copper, but the true value of its cobalt was recognized during the mid-20th century. The most intensive period of underground and open-pit operation occurred between 1949 and 1959 under the Calera Mining Company to meet Cold War demand for strategic metals. While production ceased in the 1960s and the site later underwent extensive environmental remediation, the district remains a focal point for modern exploration as a domestic source of battery-grade cobalt.
