The Defiance Mine, located near Gleeson in Cochise County, Arizona, is a well known lead and silver mining locality within the Turquoise District. Mining began in the late 1800s and the deposit developed extensive oxidized zones rich in secondary minerals. The mine is especially famous for producing outstanding crystals of wulfenite, a lead molybdate mineral that formed in the oxidation zones of lead ore deposits. Specimens from the Defiance Mine commonly occur as bright orange to red tabular crystals and are considered among the finest wulfenite examples from Arizona.
