The Franklin mining district, located in Sussex County, New Jersey, is internationally famous for its unique deposit of complex zinc-iron-manganese ores and an unparalleled assemblage of fluorescent minerals. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within the Franklin Marble, a Precambrian-age metamorphic limestone unit that underwent intense, high-grade granulite-facies metamorphism during the Grenville Orogeny approximately 1.1 billion years ago. The structural ore body forms a massive, complexly folded, hook-shaped syncline composed of unique, silver-and-black crystalline granular aggregates of franklinite, willemite, and zincite, completely lacking the typical sulfide mineral phases found in most global zinc deposits. Historically, primitive surface quarrying and localized charcoal-iron smelting of the outcropping iron-rich ores began as early as the 1760s under colonial land grants, but systematic extraction of the metallurgically complex zinc ore accelerated in 1848 with the formation of the New Jersey Zinc Company. Full-scale, highly mechanized underground shaft mining operated continuously through a network of extensive workings, culminating in the completion of the massive Palmer Shaft in 1910, which centralized all regional production. Due to the eventual physical exhaustion of the distinct ore body, commercial underground mining operations at the Franklin site permanently ceased on September 30, 1954, though the locality remains a vital historical reference site for mineralogists and collectors through 2026.
