description: The Phoenix Mine in Keweenaw County, Michigan, is an early copper mining locality developed in the 1840s to work native copper in fissure veins and amygdaloidal basalt of the Portage Lake Lava Series. In addition to copper, the mine is known among collectors for zeolite minerals formed in cavities within the volcanic rock. Analcime occurs at the Phoenix Mine as well formed white to colorless crystals, often lining vesicles and associated with minerals such as calcite and quartz.
A wonderful example for the species from this mining district. A quite large and sharp crystal of analcime measuring almost 4.0 cm across set nicely on matrix. In super condition. At one time the specimen was part of the collection of the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum at Michigan Tech University. Likely collected in the 1870s.
