Metallic micro crystals of arsenopyrite very rich across the top of this matrix, these mostly coating crystals of what were once pyrrhotite now replaced by pyrite. These measure to 1.0 cm in size. Malachite is present as well, this mainly coating or replacing chalcopyrite. The specimen is in very good condition.

The Petrovitza Mine, situated within the famous Madan ore field of the Smolyan Province in southern Bulgaria, is part of a major lead, zinc, and silver mining district with a rich history spanning from ancient Thracian and Roman times to intensive modern industrial exploitation during the twentieth century. Geologically, the deposit is located within a metamorphic core complex of the Central Rhodopes, where hydrothermal quartz-sulfide veins and skarn-replacement bodies formed along major fault structures interacting with marble horizons. Mineralogically, Petrovitza and the broader Madan district are world-renowned among museum curators and collectors for producing exceptional, high-quality specimens of galena, sphalerite, pyrite, quartz, and distinctive carbonate minerals like poker-chip calcite.

Pyrite after pyrrhotite is a classic pseudomorph where iron disulfide replaces iron sulfide while preserving the original crystal morphology of the precursor mineral. Geologically, these transformations occur within hydrothermal veins, metamorphic rocks, or massive sulfide deposits when changing chemical conditions, such as rising sulfur activity or oxidation, destabilize pyrrhotite. Mineralogically, the resulting specimens typically retain the distinctive hexagonal or tabular crystal habits characteristic of pyrrhotite, while acquiring the brassy yellow metallic luster and cubic crystal system attributes of pyrite.
