The Schneeberg mining district, situated in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) of Saxony, Germany, is one of the world's most significant historical localities for the occurrence of native bismuth. Geologically, the region is characterized by a complex network of hydrothermal veins hosted within Paleozoic schists and phyllites that were intruded by the Late Paleozoic Eibenstock granite pluton. These mineral-rich veins belong to the classic "bi-co-ni-ag-u" association, where native bismuth formed spectacular, silver-white metallic foliated masses and sharp rhombohedral crystals alongside cobaltite, nickeline, and native silver. Historically, mining and underground quarrying at Schneeberg began in the late 1400s following a massive silver rush, with the discovery of the legendary "Great Boulder" of silver and bismuth in the St. George mine in 1477. While silver was the primary early driver, the extraction of bismuth became increasingly important for the production of pewter and type metal alloys, with organized operations continuing through the 19th century under various state and private enterprises. Large-scale mining transitioned toward uranium extraction under the Soviet-German Wismut company following World War II, specifically between 1946 and 1958, before the mines finally reached the end of their economic life.

Lawrence Conklin was a world-renowned mineral dealer based in New York City, widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable and sophisticated figures in the history of the mineral trade. Operating from his office on 5th Avenue and later from his home in Connecticut, Conklin specialized in "antique" minerals and specimens with significant historical provenance. He was a meticulous researcher and an elegant writer, often publishing articles that corrected historical errors in mineralogical literature. His career spanned over five decades, during which he handled some of the finest known specimens from classic European and American localities, setting a high standard for aesthetic quality and documentation in the field.
