La Viesca Mine, Huergo, La Collada, Siero, Asturias, Spain
description: Beautiful bluish purple gemmy color zoned crystals of fluorite measuring to 3.0 cm on edge set on a brecciated matrix with crystallized quartz. This is in good condition. Quite nice for this classic Spanish locality. The La Viesca Mine in Asturias, Spain, is a well known fluorite mining locality in northern Spain that was worked mainly during the 20th century. The deposit consists of hydrothermal veins cutting limestone and related rocks, producing fluorite along with associated minerals such as calcite and sulfides. The mine became especially famous among mineral collectors for its high quality fluorite crystals, often showing cubic form and colors such as purple, blue, and yellow. Specimens from La Viesca are valued for their clarity, color, and crystal form, making the locality one of the classic fluorite sources in Europe.
