Goethite
specimen number:
2262298
location:
Hibbing, St. Louis Co., Minnesota, USA
description: The Hibbing mining district, situated on the famous Mesabi Iron Range in St. Louis County, Minnesota, is home to some of the largest open-pit iron ore quarrying and mining operations in the world, most notably the massive Hull-Rust-Mahoning Open Pit. Geologically, the district exploits the Precambrian-age Biwabik Iron Formation, a massive cherty taconite iron-bearing strata that underwent intense secondary enrichment. Localized leaching of silica by ancient groundwater networks left behind vast, concentrated pockets of high-grade, soft iron oxides consisting primarily of natural hematite and goethite. Historically, iron ore was discovered near the townsite in 1892 by Frank Hibbing, triggering an immediate industrial boom that eventually required moving the entire town of Hibbing two miles south in the 1920s to allow the expanding open-pit operations to merge into a single massive chasm. Large-scale surface extraction grew rapidly under corporate giants like the Oliver Iron Mining Company and later the United States Steel Corporation, supplying a critical percentage of the raw iron needed for domestic manufacturing and both World Wars. As the high-grade natural ores faced commercial depletion in the mid-twentieth century, the district successfully transitioned to extracting and pelletizing low-grade taconite, maintaining continuous, heavy industrial open-pit operations through corporate ventures like Hibbing Taconite which continue active extraction into 2026.
Good example of botryoidal goethite across the top of matrix. Quite choice for this mining district. The specimen comes with a previous data card that gives an acquisition date in 1967.
