specimen number:
2262245

location:
Baia Sprie, Maramures Co., Romania

description:
Bright metallic sprays of stibnite crystals across the top of matrix. Minor barite is present. The specimen comes with a previous data card with an acquisition date showing of 1970s. This is shown at the end of the video.

The Baia Sprie mining district, historically known as Felsobanya and situated in Maramures County, Romania, is a legendary European locality celebrated for producing some of the world's finest, highly metallic crystals of stibnite. Geologically, these spectacular specimens occur within a complex, Neogene-age volcanic arc setting, specifically hosted within extensive hydrothermal vein systems that cut through Neogene andesites, dacites, and surrounding sedimentary rocks. The mineralization is classified as a low-to-intermediate sulfidation epithermal deposit, where late-stage, antimony-rich hydrothermal fluids cooling within open fault fractures and volcanic vugs allowed antimony sulfide to precipitate as magnificent, long, needle-like to stout prismatic crystals of stibnite, often exceeding several inches in length and frequently associated with quartz, baryte, and iron sulfides. Historically, mining and quarrying at the site date back to antiquity, with formal written documentation of organized silver, gold, and base-metal extraction extending as far back as 1329. Large-scale corporate underground operations expanded dramatically during the 19th and 20th centuries under state and commercial management, running continuously through major industrial modernizations to supply critical antimony, lead, and zinc until economic shifts and the depletion of high-grade ore reserves led to the permanent closure of all major underground workings in 2006.
