Stibnite

specimen number:
2262296

location:
Baia Sprie, Maramures Co., Romania

description:
Compact cluster of lustrous stibnite crystals without matrix. Minor quartz present. In good condition with just slight micro-damage present.

The Baia Sprie mining district, located in Maramures County within the northern Carpathian Mountains of Romania, was a historic underground mining center celebrated for its rich polymetallic deposits and spectacular mineral specimens. Geologically, the area is situated within the Neogene-age Carpathian volcanic arc, where extensive epithermal vein systems were formed by hydrothermal fluids ascending through faults in Neogene andesites and surrounding Paleogene sedimentary rocks. These complex, steeply dipping vein structures precipitated massive amounts of base metal sulfides and silver-gold mineralization, producing rich assemblages of galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, alongside highly prized crystals of stibnite, baryte, quartz, and various silver sulfosalts. Historically, underground extraction in the region dates back to at least the fourteenth century, with formal royal mining charters granted in the 1300s during the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, when the site was known as Felsobanya. Large-scale industrial operations expanded heavily under the Austro-Hungarian Empire and continued through the twentieth century under state-run Romanian enterprises, utilizing deep shafts and processing plants to supply lead, zinc, copper, and precious metals. Production sustained high volume through the post-World War II industrialization era until structural economic shifts, high maintenance costs of deep underground facilities, and the removal of state subsidies led to the permanent cessation of all mining operations at Baia Sprie in 2006.
