The Baiut mining district, located in the Maramures County of northern Romania, is a historic metal-producing region situated within the Vihorlat-Gutin volcanic arc of the Carpathian Mountains. Geologically, the area features complex epithermal vein systems hosted in Neogene volcanic rocks, where mineralizing fluids deposited rich concentrations of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and antimony. The locality is particularly celebrated for its exceptional stibnite specimens, which are distinct from other Romanian sites due to their remarkably thick, prismatic crystal habit. Unlike the delicate, needle-like crystals found elsewhere, Baiut stibnite often forms robust, high-luster metallic blades that can reach several centimeters in width. Historically, mining in the region dates back to the Middle Ages, with intensive industrial operations expanding in the 18th and 19th centuries under Austro-Hungarian rule. Most of the significant mineral production occurred during the 20th century, but a steady decline in economic viability led to the closure of the main underground shafts in the late 2000s. Today, the thick-prismatic stibnite from Baiut remains a highly coveted regional classic, representing some of the most structurally impressive examples of the species from the European continent.
