Good reference quality example for the species from this mining district, crystals of colorless analcime measuring to 0.6 cm in size on matrix with minor epidote. In good condition. Collected in October, 1998.

The South Kearsarge Mine in Houghton County, Michigan, was part of the important Kearsarge copper mining operations on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Mining began in the late 1800s and focused on native copper deposits found in the Kearsarge amygdaloid, a copper bearing basalt flow within the Portage Lake Lava Series. The mine was developed with underground shafts and extensive workings to follow the mineralized lode. Like other mines in the district, it produced native copper along with associated minerals such as calcite, analcime, quartz, and epidote found in cavities within the volcanic rock.
